Hello Friends,
We had to cancel this workshop for now because of insufficient registration.
It will be postponed until January 2024, when hopefully more people are in town!
Advice from a Spiritual Friend (aka, Letter to the King)
by Nagarjuna
Nagarjuna’s Letter to a Friend stands apart from the other works by Buddhism’s most important philosopher in its practical orientation, unlike the deeply-argued systematic philosophy of his more-famous Middle Way Philosophy, 12-Gate Treatise, and other works.
This scripture emphasizes ethical living, and the relationship between our intentions and motivations, and ethical and moral conduct. Nagarjuna is asking us to explore this relationship between thought and action, with intellectual scrutiny, verse by verse.
CARL JEROME wrote a commentary to this work that he will share with us in this workshop.
The text in a translation by the Padmakara Translation Group (below) is available for sale ($24.95) from MZC Bookstore or for borrowing from our library.
You can also participate without the book, as Carl will provide the necessary text.
Fee for the workshop: $40.00, Dana for the teacher is welcome!
Xianyang Carl Jerome currently teaches at the North Shore Meditation & Dharma Center, which he founded. Carl has practiced Buddhism formally for the past twenty-five years. His practice began in San Francisco under Zen Master Zenshin Philip Whalen Roshi, and fifteen years ago he became a student of Master Ji Ru, abbot of the Mid-America Buddhist Association (MABA), from whom he received lay teaching endorsement.
He makes his prolific scholarship freely available on the website https://www.deepdharma.org/
