Shitou's Grass Hut

  • Milwaukee Zen Center 2825 N Stowell Ave Milwaukee, WI 53211 USA (map)

Shitou Xiqian (700-790 CE), Sekito Kisen (Jp), one of the Soto Zen ancestors, wrote a timeless poem, probably towards the end of his long life, in which he gave important teachings to his students. On first sight it may seem trivial, but at closer look one finds deep insights in the description of a simple life in the mountains. The “Grass Hut” stands for any practice place where one can meet oneself and the world.

This class is designed as an extension of the introductory course, but can be attended by anyone interested in deepening their practice. Every session will start with 15 minutes of zazen, 5 minutes of kinhin, followed by discussion of the text.

We will be using INSIDE THE GRASS HUT. Living Shitou’s Classic Poem, by Ben Connelly
It is not necessary to own the book, but please bring it if you have it.
