HUAYAN BUDDHISM and the Modern World

  • Milwaukee Zen Center 2825 N Stowell Ave Milwaukee, WI 53211 USA (map)

The HUAYAN School of Buddhism developed in China based on the monumental Avatamsaka (Huayan/Flower Garland) Sutra that arose in the early centuries of the Common Era in India. This comprohensive sutra was thought to represent the original utterings of the Buddha right after his awakening. The Huayan teachings became the philosophy of Zen, which is seen as its practice.

Uisang, a Korean Buddhist monk, transmitted Huayan to Korea and consolidated the contents of the epical sutra into thirty lines of Chinese characters that he drew into a labyrinthian diagram, the “Seal of the Hayan One Vehicle Dharma Realm”.

In eight sessions we will be studying Ben Connelly’s commentary on this work, which gives not only an overview of the Huayan teachings, but also an entry into a relationship with it for contemporary students.

NOTE: This class will be on ZOOM only!
