Buddhism arose in patriarchal societies, where only men were considered worthy of the Dharma. However, in India, China and Japan there have always women practitioners and teachers, some even highly respected.
In this class, we will become familiar with some of these names of antiquity, but also meet contemporary Zen teachers who often had to fight for equality.
The text for the class is THE HIDDEN LAMP. Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. Edited by Florence Caplow and Susan Moon. Foreword by Norman Fischer
