The recent report by UN climate scientists has brought the immediate danger of global warming into stark relief. It is now more important than ever to engage in beneficial action.
John Sabin took the bodhisattva precepts with Tozen Akiyama at the Milwaukee Zen Center in 1988 and currently leads a meditation and study group in Oberlin, Ohio. He works as one of the Great Lakes Regional Coordinators for Citizens' Climate Lobby and also serves as one of the leaders of CCL's Buddhist Action Team.
John will be discussing Buddhism and climate action through the lens of his work with Citizens’ Climate Lobby. He will frame climate action in terms of the "Western Soto Zen Buddhist Statement on the Climate Crisis," which encourages us to act with "generosity, nonviolence, and mindful effort to protect all life" and to let "political and business leaders know we care passionately about the fate of the earth." He will talk about how we can enter the highly polarized, angry world of politics in a way that is respectful and nonpartisan, and will include some concrete steps we can take to promote effective climate action. Group discussion and sharing will be encouraged.
