Genjokoan is a short fascicle by Eihei Dogen, the founder of our Zen lineage in Japan, written as a letter to one of his students. The title has been translated as “Actualizing the Fundamental Point”.
“GENJOKOAN is one of the best known chapters of Dogen Zenji’s Shobogenzo. It is the best text to use in beginning a study of Dogen’s teachings, and understanding it is essential to developing an understanding of zazen and our daily activities as bodhisattva practices”, Shohaku Okumura writes in the preface to his book Realizing Genjokoan. The Key to Dogen’s Shobogenzo.
Okumura, the Abbot of Sanshinji Zen Community in Bloomington, Indiana, is a longtime friend of our center and has presented his interpretation of Dogen’s Zen in countless genzo-e sesshins around the country.
We are going to use his book as guide for our study in this eight-week course during the Fall 2022 Practice Period.
Fee: $60.00, membership discounts apply
