KOAN Study (in-person only)

  • Milwaukee Zen Center 2825 N Stowell Ave Milwaukee, WI 53211 USA (map)

ZEN (according to Bodhidharma) is a special transmission outside the scriptures,
not founded upon words and letters.
By pointing directly to one’s mind,
it lets one see into one’s true nature
and thus attain buddhahood.

Zen transmission happens at an intimate meeting of teacher and student, “warm hand to warm hand”.
Some of these meetings, especially during the Tang Dynasty in China, have been recorded and have come down to us in several collections as koans (public cases), with commentaries by great masters.

In the eight sessions of this class, we will study some of these texts. Students will be asked to reflect on them and write their own commentary.
Zazen is vital for this study, and a strong sitting practice is encouraged.

Koan Classics are:
The Book of Serenity, The Blue Cliff Record, The Gateless Gate, The True Dharma Eye (Zen Master Dogen’s Three Hundred Koans)
It is not necessary to own these, but please bring them to the class if you have them.
