Since Sakyamuni Buddha’s time, there have been woman teachers in Buddhism, and even though there is no gender difference in awakened nature, women have mostly been ignored in the official lineages. In this class we will take a look at the historical evidence and contemporary situation of female teachers and their contribution to Zen in particular.
The main study text will be THE HIDDEN LAMP, Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women. Edited by Florence Caplow and Susan Moon, with a foreword by their teacher Norman Fischer. It is available for sale ($18.95; $ 12.00 for class participants), and there are a couple of copies in the library.
Eight weekly classes from Monday, March 2 until April 27, with the exception of Easter Monday, 4/13.
Fee: $60.00, membership discounts apply.
